24th Sketchcrawl - BCN

Had a lovely time meandering about Barceloneta.

First stop: To the beach to observe old people and young guiris tanning.

Then: The market/open square to watch people shop and kids playing.

And after: Tapas in a restaurant where the waiter insisted the seafood was good.

Finally: Sitting on the steps along the main avenue listening to silly songs from street musicians.

24th Sketchcrawl - 19 Sept 2009

I participated 24th World Wide SketchCrawl event with several other sketchers on September the 19th. We went to Barceloneta in Barcelona. There is a beach and a port there. This was my second sketchcrawl and wandering in the district and trying to park my bike took more time than drawing (sometimes I think it would just be faster to walk!). I didn't get there until lunchtime but most of other members worked from the morning and they made so many fine sketches while I was running around, stuck on the metro! EVENTUALLY I found the crew, and as usual, I have been totally awe-struck and amazed by the work I'm seeing from the other artists. It's really inspiring.

SO here's what I got up to yesterday:

This is where we had lunch, in La Plaça de Barceloneta.

www.madeinbarcelona.com a very groovy band we watched playing in the port. Reggae/funk with funny lyrics (in Spanish! Thx for the translation Cesar).

24th SketchCrawl

We had lovely weather and picked the best area in the city to get the best feeling of the end of the summer, ¨La Barceloneta¨.
Built in 1753, with its original intended purpose to host fishermen and sailors who had been dislodged from the Ciutadella in Ribera quarter. Nowadays it keeps the same flavour that must have had back in the days, although all the fishermen activity has been replaced by the one generated by tons of tourists looking forward to get their overdose of sun, sangria and tapas and from the Barcelona citizens that want to enjoy the beach in their city.

This 24th SketchCrawl has been the largest in participation so far (9 people all together), although some of us missed Barcelona's pioneer SketchCrawler
Dave. People was coming and leaving at all times and made the day quite busy in that sense, however most of us met at 11am and headed towards the beach for the first sketch.
Once everybody was sitting in the sand I though it'd be a nice idea to draw them all together (I'm sorry I don't remember everybody's name so I choose to not mention anybody... you know who you are!)

I think that some of us got our eyes on a group of trendy guys sunbathing and looking at the sea.

The sun was getting strong so we left towards the ¨Plaça de la Font¨ that helds the Barceloneta market. While some SketchCrawlers went into the market I decided to sit down in a terrace and capture a view of the square with some of the locals enjoying fishfood tapas. After a while the fellow Crawlers joined me on the table!

With hunger creeping up from our stomachs, we left from one square to another, this time to ¨La Plaça de la Barceloneta¨, a cosy square where we found place to sit and eat some tapas. With nice food in our bellies some of us had the strength to carry on drawing without leaving the table. I pushed myself to draw the front of Sant Miquel del Port church (I need to work on those irregular lines)

We were 3 of us left after lunch so we left the square looking for something else to sketch and some late afternoon sun... we found the perfect subject between 2 palm trees and Barcelona's leisure port as their backdrop: ¨Made in Barcelona¨ a salsa/latin street band with cheeky lyrics, funny choreography and good sound (saxophonist and percussionist are missing on my sketch as they were behind the rest of the band)

Left alone I still had one sketch to do.

Tired but happy with the day's experience I left La Barceloneta with the sound of the band saying good bye. Thanks to everybody for coming and making the day so much fun and interesting.

Barcelona 24th Sketchcrawl

Here is my contribution to the Sketchcrawl. Thanks to all of you, because you are a great bunch of drawers. See you next meeting.

The day started cloudy, but when we meet the sun appeared. We went to the Barceloneta beach, we spread out and spent some time drawing. The sun was more and more shiny, then I remember the last time I was under the sun and how I burnt my arms. Behind the umbrella there is a new polemic hotel, designed by the wellknown architec Ricardo Bofill. It is the "Hotel Vela".

People still sunbathing at the beach. Drawing people is the most difficult thing, they are always moving!

After the beach we decided to go to the Barceloneta market. Renewed in the 2007 by architect Josep Miàs. Again people moving. It was my last sketch and I had to leave after finish it. Thank you, see you next time.

23rd Sketch Crawl

For the 23rd Sketch Crawl, the Barcelona group decided to set out for Parc Güell. Although this time the group was missing two members, we had the pleasure of sharing the company of two new members, Leslie and Karyn ( Leslie and his girlfriend were on holiday in Europe but we hope to see Karyn for all future crawls). Designed by the famous architect Antoni Gaudi, the park is located high up on the hill offering an amazing panoramic view of Barcelona city. Monica was the star of the day, giving us a guided tour on our way to the park, explaining the architectural history of Barcelona and also the story behind the construction of the park (thanks again!).

Upon arriving at the park, we made our way to the camin del tres creus, thinking it would be best to start of with the most tiring walk first (the park is built on a hill with lots of winding paths). From this point there is a great view of the city and nearby hills. But just like the previous sketchcrawl, we had just started to draw when the first few drops of rain started to fall! We decided to head back down to get some shelter, but of course as soon as we started walking the rain eased off! At that point, Leslie and his girlfriend decided to head down anyway while Monica and I returned to the first spot to finish the drawings we had barely started
(Karyn hadn't arrived yet).

This is a view looking towards the Carmel neighbourhood. These two buildings peep out from behind all the trees and shrubbery that cover the hill.

I spent a while drawing emerging roof tops!!

We headed down towards the central plaza. There we started sketching just to the left of it where there is a passage lined with columns whose external sides are composed of stones piled up to resemble palm trees. Gaudi used the palm tree for inspiration in designing a lot of the park decorations, including the iron gates at the entrance.

These are views from the same point, the first looking right towards the central plaza (which is on a higher level) and the second looking left where the passage curves round.

Once again it started to rain and we took shelter in the passage. This is a sketch of Monica painting and a human-statue in the background. Barcelona has a lot of these artists who stand for hours on end while in disguise. This guy was a caveman complete with enormous rubber feet and staff (he looked a bit fed up and was up and down from his platform during the few minutes we sheltered). The other sketch is of the external side of a column (from the distance they look like palm trees).

We then headed over to the opposite side of the central plaza. It was extremely difficult to concentrate on drawing due to the constant traffic of people passing by (it would be like trying to draw what's on a cinema screen while everyone constantly passes by to take their seat!). This problem and the hunger factor ( it was now 15:30 and we had met at 11:30) meant it was time for a break. By coincidence Karyn got in touch to say she had just arrived. It was funny trying to meet someone for the first time at a crowded spot. We went for some food and had a nice chat about life in Barcelona (neither of the three are originally from here). Batteries recharged, it was time to return to the steps on the right hand side of the central plaza and finish what we had left off (we met Leslie on the way who decided it was time to call it a day). Inspired by Monica's watercolours I thought I'd try to add some colour to my drawing. Having wrapped the paint box and a small bottle of water in plastic bags, the noise I made removing them disturbed Monica more than all the passing crowds! ( a lot of whom were taking photos of her as she painted)

According to Monica the central plaza was intended for performances while below it was a market place. The three of us then bunched up on a bench to draw the roof of one of the two houses at the main entrance. When most people see this building they think of the candy house in the Hansel and Grethel story. While sketching we realised there was a girl on a bench facing us who was also drawing.

It was a great day spent in great company. Although I did feel like I was committing a sin doing black and white drawings in such a colourful park! There were other spots in the park we didn't get to see so maybe we could repeat the location for a future sketch crawl, that way Eclecticbox and Lapin won't have missed out.

Anyone that comes to Barcelona shouldn't go home without having visited Parc Güell!

23rd Sketchcrawl ~ July 2009

These sketches are from Parc Güell, when we did a group gathering in July. It was an alright day weather-wise. I was very happy to meet other artists and feel honored to be accepted into a group of such ridiculously talented and cool people.

This first sketch was so full of details, the others had finished their sketches and we moved on, but I actually don't mind this sort of half-done look. Let's pretend I did that on purpose...

This is terribly out-of-proportion! But my friends assure me that it looks fine and you can't notice the scaling problems. After all, I am invoking my artistic licence to get away with posting this! LOL...

OK, this wasn't actually from a sketchcrawl day, but I've plonked it in here out of a lack of better ideas of where to put it. I did it ages ago when I was waiting for a friend to join me at some metro station in town, which I can't remember the name of (that's why we write the name of the place ON the drawing at the time of doing it! )

22nd SketchCrawl

Sorry for the delay! My health is not as good as it should be.
Here are my results, thanks for the invitation!
